Providence Restaurant / Second Harvest Food Bank

Giving the community a taste of a nonprofit’s career training mission.

Background

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC had an opportunity to expand their culinary training program by opening their own restaurant in a hotel. This allowed for a variety of opportunities: the ability to train more students, give them a taste of working in both front- and back-of-house roles and to provide front-facing exposure for the community.


Our Approach

We were asked to develop the branding for Providence Restaurant—a new venture that would serve as both a full-service restaurant and a training ground for students in Second Harvest’s culinary program. The brand needed to feel welcoming and professional, with the flexibility to grow alongside the program’s evolving offerings.

As the initiative expanded to include products like jarred sauces and services like catering, we built a visual system that could carry across packaging, menus, signage, and promotional materials while staying grounded in the mission of food, dignity, and opportunity.

To help generate buzz around the opening, we leaned into a delightful idea from the client: delivering fresh-baked bread as an invitation to the soft launch. For donor recognition, we created a wall of plates—each size representing a different giving level. The installation offered both a creative storytelling moment and a tangible way to celebrate the community’s investment in the program.

The Result

The restaurant launch was a success. Providence quickly became a valued part of the hotel experience, even taking on room service operations. As demand grew, a second location opened in a downtown office building—offering catering services and serving breakfast and lunch to the surrounding business community. Most importantly, the culinary training program continues to thrive, helping students gain real-world experience and launch careers in the food industry.

Their tagline says it all: Serving Something Beautiful.
